Explore key takeaways from a recent webinar where our Head of Product, David Mor Ofek, alongside industry experts, discussed evolving cybersecurity threats in the EV ecosystem and the strategic approaches necessary for safeguarding it.
On October 11, 2023, David participated at Automotive World’s Future Mobility 2023, a week-long webinar series that covered topics from sustainability, vehicle architecture, cybersecurity, and quantum computing. David’s webinar was moderated by Kay Thielemann, Partner at Roland Berger, alongside industry experts Chip Goetzinger from AutoMobility Advisors and Paul Wooderson from HORIBA MIRA. The hour-long discussion shed light on the evolving cyber threats and the vital strategies necessary for safeguarding the EV ecosystem.
David highlighted the need to extend cybersecurity measures to include not just the vehicles, but also the charging stations, emphasizing a gap in the current regulatory framework. He mentioned, “different stakeholders need to understand risk and communicate risk,” advocating for a broader approach to ensure the safety of both EVs and charging stations.
Building on David’s point, Chip Goetzinger warned against relying solely on regulatory frameworks, noting, “relying on regulatory means you’re going to be years behind best practices.” He stressed the importance of proactive, industry-led initiatives to stay ahead of cybersecurity threats.
Paul Wooderson discussed the real-world implications of cyber-attacks on EVs, focusing on the threat of ransomware. He also described a ‘worst-case scenario’ where attackers could potentially control the grid, underscoring the importance of a comprehensive cybersecurity approach to handle a wide range of threats.
The discussion offered valuable insights into the multifaceted cybersecurity challenges faced by the EV industry and the collaborative efforts required among stakeholders to secure the EV ecosystem against cyber threats.
The panel discussion is packed with insightful dialogues that provide a deeper understanding of the cybersecurity landscape in the EV market and what we’ve touched on here is just a brief part of the extensive dialogue.
